Niranjana Swami's Quote Of The Day

May 17

The sincere devotee of the Lord is always praying for the opportunity to satisfy the Lord and to satisfy others by helping them to increase their attachment to the service of the Lord. There is no other way to satisfy anybody in this material world. They may get some flickering happiness because of some material achievement. However, in their heart there will always be something lacking. Everybody is feeling that intense lacking in this material world. It is rare for a person to understand the need to hanker for the service of the Supreme Lord; however that potential spark is within the heart of every living being. A devotee of the Lord sees that spark in everyone—that by nature, everyone has a desire to serve Krishna. This is the real sense of unity that exists on the platform of Krishna consciousness.

A Vaishnava wants to see others happy and free from anxiety. We should always try to faithfully serve Vaishnavas by spreading the glories of Krishna consciousness for the welfare of others. This was the mission of our previous acaryas. Service to Vaishnavas is real service to Krishna. Vaishnavas are para-dukha-dukhi—they see others’ anxieties as their own. Thus, to serve Vaishnavas, we must think of how we can relieve their anxieties that they have taken on behalf of others who are suffering. We can see why Srila Prabhupada always wanted us to strongly and vigorously preach Krisana consciousness. By doing this, we will please Srila Prabhupada, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta and our entire guru-parampara. We will relieve the anxieties of others and we will see that our own anxieties will also go away. Prabhupada said that when you take care of others, Krishna will take care of you. When you help others to become Krishna conscious, you become Krishna conscious yourself.

Prabhupada said that the impersonalists always pride themselves on rejecting everything and having nothing to do with this material world. Prabhupada, however, said, “I will take everything! I will use it for spreading Krishna consciousness.” His vision was to utilize everything for spreading the glories of the Lord; but not for sense gratification. Sense gratification leads to suffering, but everything in this world becomes valuable when it is dovetailed for the service of the Lord.

Thus, because the body is an important vehicle for crossing over the material world, one therefore maintains it so that he can use it for self-realization and not waste it for sense gratification. Lord Rishabhadeva explains that of all living entities who have been awarded material bodies, one who has accepted the human form of life should not waste it in the pursuit of sense gratification like the hogs and dogs that eat stool. One should instead engage in divine austerities and penances to achieve the divine position of devotional service, because by such activities one’s heart is purified and one begins to experience real happiness, which is transcendental to material happiness and which continues forever. Those austerities are to engage in devotional service to the Lord and to use everything in the service of the Lord. If one uses anything for his own enjoyment, he will have to face the consequences.

"We should realize that we are the most unqualified. However, Lord Caitanya has come to deliver those who are the most unqualified. Our qualification for spiritual life is this genuine feeling of unqualification. Krishna therefore gives us the association of those who can help us become more qualified in our spiritual life. If we always see things in that perspective, we cannot fail in Krishna consciousness.

To increase our own faith, we look for somebody who has more faith and in whom we can invest our faith. By investing our faith, we get good returns. We should associate with the purpose of increasing our faith. Material qualification is irrelevant, unless it is dovetailed in devotional service. Although people saw Suklambhara Brahmacari as a beggar, he never knew the meaning of the word poverty, because he was always satisfied in his heart. Although he externally appeared to not have anything, in actuality, he had the most valuable jewel—the gem of complete faith in the Lord.

When we read examples in the scriptures about associates of the Lord who achieved such perfection, we may think that it is because they are associates of the Lord, but that we are just an ordinary jiva. Again, we should not be discouraged. Those examples are actually meant to build our faith. Prabhupada once said that we should not think that we cannot become like mother Yasoda and serve Krishna as she does. Everybody can have this opportunity.

We should always try to keep ourselves in the association of devotees who we can see as superior. We should not feel discouraged. It is due to our false ego that we may feel discouraged in the presence of someone who is superior, thinking ourselves a failure. However, that sense of being a failure should never be in the heart of a devotee. A devotee who thinks that way is lacking faith in the process of chanting the holy name and in the association of devotees. The real progress in life that we should be aspiring for is to increase that faith. We should therefore seek out the devotees who can give us more faith. Seeing others more successful than ourselves in Krishna consciousness should actually give us faith that this process is possible for us.

Sometimes Krishna very mercifully arranges, either Himself or through the association with His devotees, for us to be forced to confront our attachments. Each time we are forced to do so, we may not deal with that confrontation in an appropriate way, especially if we start becoming offensive. Rather than looking at the attachment within our own heart as an obstacle, we begin to look for faults in others, or in the process itself. This is the result of harboring attachments without the desire to give them up. We become fearful of losing them, and thus we protect them.

When one sees that there are some discrepancies or deviations, the best way that he can serve that person is by pointing out the fault. By doing so in the mood of service, it is a lot easier for somebody to accept it. However, if he points it out in the mood of malice or envy, then the statement may not have the same effect.
